Well, that is a great idea, but I do not know the names and I can describe it, but am really bad… so if some of you would contribute some kind of description of the great food in Camiguin (i miss it sooooo) and the fruits… it would be gladly accepted and appreciated!

Wealth of Information

October 31st, 2008

I find it amazing that there is a lot of information can be found about the country that I was born in.  So I thought I would share some of this with you, as you search I’ve put some information hear for all to share and pass it all around.  I am proud to be a filipina/americano and love both country that I born and raised in the US.  I’ve travelled other places and lived in United Kingdom and was amazed that there are alot of filipinos living and working there as well!  Some have married british husbands and children that grew up but know that they’re heritage is a wonderful island that has more history to tell and share with everyone.

The nursing field is filled with filipino nurses in all of the hospitals in around the UK (Wales, Scotland & England)…if any of you ever get a chance to visit the UK, I encourage you to do so…Wales, Scotland and England has many to offer to make your stay a pleasant one.

I hope that you come back often and see what else I’ve written…comments, suggestion are welcome as well as criticism.

Malunggay

October 18th, 2008

I wanted to share something with you that my Aunt sent to me - I’ve never heard of this vegetable and don’t know what it is!
If someone can enlighten me I would be thankful…like how does it taste? Have a fun read!

The Filipino vegetable called Malunggay

Gone are the days when the lowly malunggay is not appreciated by many
Filipinos who consider it as only a poor man’s food and is remembered only
as an important ingredient for soup to be given to mothers who has just given birth to their baby.

Malunggay as it is called in the Philippines, “Sajina” in the Indian Subcontinent, and “Moringa” in English, is now being eyed by the Department of Agriculture to take the center stage in the reduction of malnutrition and poverty in the country.
No less than President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo was “pleased to hear about the use of nutritious indigenous vegetables like malunggay which we are using extensively for our school feeding program” during the opening of the Agrilink, Foodlink, Aqualink 2008
which constitute the country’s biggest and most prestigious annual international trade show on agribusiness, food and aquaculture. The malunggay is not only promising niche crop that translates into more income for the planters, it is also an excellent source of the vitamins and minerals needed by the body.

Moreso, the malunggay is now being eyed as a potential export product as a natural ingredient for cosmetics and pharmaceutical applications.
Many Asians use the leaves of Malunggay (Sajina) like spinach and also the fruit it produces as a vegetable, like asparagus.
Both the leaves and the fruits are very nutritious, which contain many vitamins like Vitamin C and other minerals.
For centuries, people in India, Philippines, Malaysia, and Thailand, have been eating these leaves as a part of their food.

Now, those who laugh when Grandma forces breastfeeding Mama to drink soup with malunggay leaves or when Mama insists on the children to eat malunggay, will have second thoughts. Malunggay is a wonderful herb known all over the world, but only recently in the U.S. It may provide the boost
in energy, nutrition and health. What a remarkable discovery that can make a tremendous difference in the Filipino people’s health and quality of life. Mounting scientific evidence shows what has been known for thousands of years by people in the tropical parts of the world: Malunggay is nature’s medicine cabinet.

Malunggay is best known as an excellent source of nutrition and a natural energy booster. Loaded with nutrients, vitamins and amino acids, it replenishes the body and provides what one needs to get through a hectic weekday or active weekend.
No wonder Grandma insists on breastfeeding Mama to take malunggay. Malunggay is loaded with nutrients. Each ounce of Moringa contains seven times the Vitamin C found in oranges, four times the Vitamin A of carrots, three times the iron of spinach, four times as much calcium from milk and three times the potassium of bananas.

What a cheap way of solving malnutrition in the country! Sometimes, people think that solutions to their problems are expensive and hard to find. But more often than not, real solutions to basic problems are abundant, cheap and even free. Health problems are especially solved with natural
inexpensive gifts from nature. Gone are the days when one finds himself slowing down as the candles multiply on top of his birthday cake, because Malunggay gives back some of the energy lost. In fact, Moringa is also relaxing… it helps to reduce blood pressure and assure a good night’s sleep.

University laboratories around the world have studied Moringa’s ability to purify water… attaching itself to harmful material and bacteria, and allowing them to be expelled as waste. Other health benefits identified by people who use Moringa continue this same pattern: immune system strengthened, skin condition restored, blood pressure controlled, headaches and migraines handled, diabetes sugar level managed, inflammations and arthritis pains reduced, tumors restricted and ulcers healed.

Scientifically speaking, Moringa sounds like magic. It can rebuild weak bones, enrich anemic blood and enable a malnourished mother to nurse her starving baby. A dash of Moringa can make dirty water drinkable. Doctors use it to treat diabetes in West Africa and high blood pressure in India.
Not only can it staunch a skin infection, but Moringa also makes an excellent fuel and fertilizer. Mark Fritz of the Los Angeles Times wrote, Malunggay has triple the iron of spinach and more impressive attributes than olive oil. Both Moringa and the common carrot are diamonds in the roughage department, but Moringa has quadruple the beta carotene, which is good for the eyes and effective against cancer. Fritz also reports on the positive results of using Moringa as a substitute for expensive whole milk powder in nutrition projects.

Indeed, Malunggay is a wonderful blessing for Filipinos. It easily grows and is available everywhere and anywhere in the country. This is a positive development in the government’s campaign to reduce malnutrition and increase the income of farmers who would cultivate the hardy tree and supply local and foreign corporations with natural ingredients for cosmetics and pharmaceutical applications.

25 Ways To Build Your Community!

October 17th, 2008

Okay, here is a tip on how to build your blog - of course I took this from Hubby’s own blog as he’s doing pretty darn good at it…and besides he’s a techy geeky guy…so I get tips and ideas from him and for free! :o)

25 Ways to Build Your Community

  1. Read at least 100 blogs regularly. Not every post, but a variety. Extra hint: go OUTSIDE your particular passion circle.
  2. Write brief, tight, actionable posts that people want to reference later.
  3. Don’t ignore the value of linkbait and viral content. Don’t ALWAYS do that, but hey, it can work.
  4. Give people your best. I know that sounds trite, but I’m saying don’t charge for the best and give away your crap. That’s a yard sale. Be Tiffany & Co.
  5. When you write about people, use LINKS to connect your writing to them. This encourages good neighbor policies.
  6. Write great titles that draw people in. (Brian Clark is the master.)
  7. Keep lists of blog topics handy for when you feel down.
  8. Learn how to write more than one post a day, and put the others in your blogging platform for rainy days (or when you’re busy). This saves my butt TONS of times. (I have a day job, you know.)
  9. Promote other people’s work 12 times as much as you promote your own. This comes back as great karma, plus it shows people you recognize that other people are brilliant, not just you.
  10. Comment the HELL out of other people’s blogs. Not fishing for your blog. Just adding your voice to theirs.
  11. Get regular or irregular opportunities to guest blog. Years ago, I was blogging for Leon Ho at LifeHack.org. That got me plenty more friends than I had before.
  12. “Claim” your blog with Technorati
  13. List your blog in Dmoz.org, Yahoo, Google, etc.
  14. Make subscribing easy. I use FeedBurner to do that. I also use easy to find buttons. I also ASK people to subscribe in about 5 different ways.
  15. Build outposts.
  16. Use Twitter effectively.
  17. Use plug-ins like ShareThis and AddThis that add little “share” buttons after your posts.
  18. Occasionally, when it’s a really good post, stumble yourself or bookmark it in Delicious. (Then go stumble 10 or 12 other people’s good work to absolve your sin.)
  19. Go to meetups, conferences, and all types of live events. The more that people know you and can put your face to your work, the more they are likely to promote your work (and you theirs). Yes, this takes time, but you asked how I did it. That’s also how.
  20. Make the occasional video or audio post so that people start to connect you the human to you the blogger. This works to “humanize” your efforts, and this is vital to what I think has made me successful.
  21. Don’t be snarky. There are precious few who do it well. And plenty who do it poorly. Yes, it seems to help grow traffic, but I’m not going to advocate for it. Sorry.
  22. Thank people endlessly. Be so full of humility and thanks and gracious awe at the fact that people share time with you (while not being one of those put-down artists) that your work comes off as perpetually fresh and energized and useful.
  23. Be helpful. Have you ever heard that from me? Be helpful. Be helpful. The more you do for others, the more they want to point it out.
  24. Keep your eyes on the STRATEGY of what you’re doing. Otherwise, there are tons of ways to fall into rabbit holes.
  25. Encourage participation. Make your blog about other people, not you. Share and encourage and ask questions. Give your stage to your guest performers. Make it ALL a partnership with your community.
