CAMIGUIN ISLAND, Philippines

May 15th, 2007

I wanted to make a page for this, as I feel that everyone should be able to read about the island I grew up till I was 10 years old. I have very fond memories of this island and feel that they have not ruin it by building and putting high rises…instead left it as mother nature intended it to be. I long to go back, and one day I will return…my son will be there in June for my parents, 50th and unfortunately, I won’t be able to make it and my son will be representing me…am sure the event will be great memory! Hope you enjoy this bit and hopefully you can go to the official website and take a trip to see one of the many wonders of the world… :)

CAMIGUIN is a pear-shaped volcanic island with a total land area of 238 sq. kilometers. It lies 10 kilometers off the coast of the Province of Misamis Oriental. Along with the Provinces of Bukidnon, Lanao del Norte, Misamis Occidental and Misamis Oriental, CAMIGUIN forms part of a geopolitical grouping of provinces comprising Region X or Northern Mindanao. In terms of land area, CAMIGUIN is only around 2 percent of Region X.

CAMIGUIN ISLAND is said to be “Born of Fire”. It has seven volcanoes unmatched anywhere else in Southeast Asia. Volcanic eruptions and land movements have created this spectacular island full of natural wonders and historical riches.

As an island of varied ecosystem, CAMIGUIN’S uniqueness lies in its varied terrain, pristine natural environment and rustic setting. As a matter of fact, the Province has been identified by the Department of Tourism as one of the top 25 tourist destinations in the Philippines, and No. 7 diving spot in the world.Caminguin Island

CAMIGUIN almost defies description, I should say. It is a tiny island of lush forests, volcanic splendor, eternal hot and cold natural springs, pristine patches of black and white beaches, majestic waterfalls, exotic marine life, blue-ridge mountains, serene surroundings, idyllic lifestyle; it has a glorious past, and is inhabited with jovial people. The truth is, CAMIGUIN is best experienced than described as one gets enchanted by her mystical charm. It really has amazing natural resources and peaceful atmosphere that stir and baffle the minds of everyone.Camiguin, Whitel Island

CAMIGUIN is believed to be one of the Philippines’s most beautiful island - a virtual paradise - as the island allows visitors to experience a sample of untouched beauty in its entirety. Locked in the eternal embrace of the sea, CAMIGUIN continues its simple existence sheltered from and unfazed by the virulent pressures of today’s accelerated lifestyles.

CAMIGUIN generally has good weather with seasonal rain showers enhancing its fresh green environment. Fine weather is guaranteed from April to June, while the coolest is from November to January.

To get to CAMIGUIN, one has to travel one and a half hours from Cagayan de Oro City to Balingoan, Misamis Oriental, and take any of the hourly scheduled ferries across the channels of Mindanao Sea, which dock in either ports of Guinsiliban or Benoni. There is a regular sea and air transportation from Cebu to CAMIGUIN and vice versa. Once in CAMIGUIN, one can go around the 64-kilometer circumferential road in just one hour and a half time through public or private transportation.

The people of CAMIGUIN are friendly, fun-loving, and very hospitable. Camiguingnons are also hardworking. The main occupation of the people is fishing and farming. Coconut is the major production as far as sources of income is concerned. Other plantations are abaca, rice, mangoes, lanzones and other fruit trees. Small cottage industries are increasing in number to accommodate the influx of visitors. Cebuano is the main language while a few speak Kinamiguin, an ancient dialect. Nearly everyone speaks English fairly.

CAMIGUIN beckons you to come, savor and discover the many ways anyone can unwind and joyfully dwell on the island’s offerings.

    kath,

first of all, please accept my hearfelt condolence for the loss of Nong Pinggoy. we lost a great man. we had a great time discussing camiguin issues after tennis games - of course, over some round of beer. that was in 1992-1998 when i started the camiguin telephone project. i'll be coming home this summer for our family reunion. surely i will miss your dad.

it's nice to see you and dada meet over the web. me, too, have memories with Nang Nenen, at felix huertas st., during my college days. i'm a frequent visitor, not only during September fiesta novenas, but to visit my cousins - jojo & ex bollozos. of course, charito barlaan stayed there, too.

Kath, this might come as a surprise for you. the last time i see you was at the classroom of Mam Titang Mora. if you still have a class picture of Grade 1 or 2, taken at the facade of Fatime College of Camiguin auditorium, i can tell you where i am. yes, we're classmates!

you have a great blog, Kath. keep it up.

    best regards,
    nandy

I was born and grew up on the same island. I'm a constant partcipant of Panaad, a yearly Holy Week event that challenges participants to walk around Camiguin.

I just had a time off from work and had spent my weekend there. I miss the old Camiguin where you can count by hand the number of vehicles and the silence. What I miss most is the warm welcome by locals, like me!

A new site was just opened, it's in Sagay, Camiguin. (Where I grew up.) It's the Binangawan Falls. I haven't been there but they say that the falls creates a rainbow hence the name "bangaw" = rainbow. And there are also wild strawberries growing near the falls.

Another site is the Ilihan hill, a dormant volcano visible in Guinsiliban and Sagay. I've been there and it has the best sunrise Camiguin could offer. Heavenly! And it has pine trees, fog and clouds below, a little unscathed Baguio.

    Camiguin is a real treasure.
